Chapter 8
I stood frozen, unsure of how to react, then felt a surge of frustration.
“What is wrong with you? You have your child call me ‘Mom‘? Is this how you act as a father?”
Lynley had been coached by Keith to call Acelynn ‘Mommy, which is why he no longer wanted me as his mother. Now this man was doing the same.
The man smiled and patted the child’s head. “Ms. Mitchell, you still don’t remember me?”
I furrowed my brow, scrutinizing him. After a

moment, I finally recalled who he was.
“Dor. Riley?”
He had been the one to monitor my pregnancy with Lynley.
Jeremy raised an eyebrow. “That’s right.”
But even if we knew each other, it was inappropriate for him to have his child call me ‘Mom!
Jeremy allowed the child to cling to me as I asked about his mother.
“He doesn’t have a mother.”
I was taken aback.

Jeremy continued, “He was abandoned by his family at birth. I felt sorry for him, so I took him in.”
He spoke with a cold tone, and his gaze was unsettling.
Jeremy’s child was named Oliver, or Ollie for short. When Oliver was born, his condition was poor, and he spent a month in an incubator. During that time, his family never visited. The hospital intended to send him to an orphanage, but Jeremy, feeling pity, took him in and raised him.
Jeremy was single and had never considered finding a mother for Oliver. Yet, he had Oliver call me ‘Mom‘ and even moved next door to

my new house.
“Jeremy, I can’t actually be a mother to Oliver. I have my own child,” I said, though that child was far from perfect.
Jeremy smirked slightly. “Oh? So you
don’t like Oliver? Is he disobedient or
unattractive?”
On the contrary, I liked Oliver very much. He was well–behaved and cute. But he wasn’t my child.
After I spoke, Jeremy handed Oliver over to me again.
“Then it’s settled. I’m going on a business trip for a week. Can you look after the child

during that time?”
He then told Oliver, “Stay with your ‘mom‘ for a week, and when I return, I want to hear your thoughts.”
I was at a loss and couldn’t understand how Jeremy could trust a stranger with his child.
