Oliver and I stared at each other for a while. Suddenly, he threw himself at my legs.
“Mommy, I’m hungry.”
His eyes were wide and bright, like black gems. I couldn’t help but feel a pang of tenderness.
I prepared a full spread of food, and Oliver eagerly dug in, his tiny body bobbing with each bite. Then, he started to cry.
I lifted his small face and wiped his tears. “Why are you crying?”

“This is the first time I’ve ever had food made by Mommy. It’s so delicious it made me cry.”
His childish voice tugged at my heartstrings. Oliver, who had no mother, truly saw me as his mom.
He snuggled into my arms, asking me to tell him a story. He also shared tales from school, his words filled with envy for his classmates.
“Mommy, please don’t go. I’ll be very good.”
Oliver clung to my arm, desperately seeking the motherly love he had never known. It reminded me of Lynley. He used to be this attached to me, but over time, he began to dislike me and prefer Keith.

Oliver was more obedient than Lynley. After meals, he helped clear the table and would wash fruit for me while we watched TV. Lynley would never have thought of doing these things for me.
I found myself growing more fond of Oliver, even wishing he could be my own child. As we sat on the sofa watching TV, the thought of Jeremy coming back and Oliver leaving made me feel a pang of sadness. I instinctively held him tighter.
“Mommy, there’s a parent–teacher meeting tomorrow. Will you come with me?”
Oliver’s eyes were full of hope, and I realized I couldn’t refuse him.

“Okay.”
Oliver’s eyes widened in disbelief, and then he leaped up from the sofa.
“That’s wonderful! I finally have a mommy now!”
I felt a pang of sorrow.
