Elizabeth Taylor’s gaze drifted to the clock 10:50 PM, which meant her husband Franklin Jones would be strolling through the door any moment now.
In ten minutes, he’d stride into their room and asked her why she was still up. Then he’d take off his tic I start tending to his own things. Same old song and dance they’d been doing for the last three years. Franklin never changed a bit, and Elizabeth was sick of it.
She had the divorce papers stashed away, but for now, she plastered on a smile and waited for her dear husband to make his grand entrance.
Sure enough, the clock struck 11 and in walked Franklin.
Before he could launch into his usual polite chatter, Elizabeth beat him to it. She went over and fussed with his slippers, playing the obedient little wife. “You’re back, Been keeping busy?” she asked.
Franklin ignored Elizabeth’s question, acting like he hadn’t even heard her. Not surprising she was all too used to his indifference by now.

As she got to her feet, he was already fiddling with that tie of his. Elizabeth just went about quietly untying it and sliding it off for him.
When her fingers grazed his snow-white collar, she spotted a faint hint of eyeshadow earthy tones, not as obvious-as a lipstick mark. If she hadn’t been the one to untie that tie, she never would’ve clocked the eyeshadow,

Seeing the look on her face, Franklin asked, unusually patient, “What’s wrong?” Elizabeth just smiled and shook her head. “Nothing.”
Franklin didn’t push it any further. He just breezed past her and headed for the bathroom, not a word.
Flicking on the light, he found the tub already filled with steaming hot water – Elizabeth had taken care of that without even being asked.
To everyone else, Elizabeth was the very picture of a perfect wife – graceful, kind, devoted, and endlessly tolerant. That was why Franklin took her love and loyalty for granted over the years, forgetting the strong-willed woman she had been before she married him.
“Fran…” Elizabeth struggled to get the words out but kept her composure. A faint smile played on her lips as she locked eyes with him. “Franklin, have you forgotten what day it is today?”
Peering through the crack in the bathroom door, Franklin pulled it open slightly

with his foot, revealing half of his face as he leisurely worked on his cufflink. “What day is it?”
“You really don’t remember, do you?” Elizabeth asked, a hint of sorrow seeping into her voice.
‘Or maybe he never did in the first place,’ she thought, deflated.
“Well, tell me what gift you’d like and I’ll have J**y drop it off tomorrow,” Franklin replied, neither acknowledging the lapse nor pressing for more details. In his eyes, women were all about the material stuff, so he figured a gift was the way to go, assuming that was what she wanted.
Clenching her fists, Elizabeth felt her heart breaking – not because of Franklin’s apparent coldness, but because of the love and effort she’d poured into the past three years.
Before she married Franklin, those women in high society high-society had warned Elizabeth that he was as cold as ice and as untouchable as a high mountain peak. From a distance, he might have seemed noble and proud, but up close, he was like stepping into a deep freeze.
Elizabeth, however, wasn’t one to let a few cautionary tales deter her. She charged ahead recklessly, only to end up with a bruised heart.
Now, after taking out the neatly arranged divorce papers from the bookshelf, Elizabeth hunkered down in a dimly lit corner. With a steady hand, she signed her name to the documents. Once her mind was made up, she started getting herself dressed.
The noise outside caught Franklin’s attention.
Turning his head amidst the flickering light, he saw his supposedly “perfect wife” calmly slipping on a beige trench coat. Despite the mild autumn air, she had donned a scarf and gloves.
As Elizabeth lifted her head, Franklin caught a flicker of exhaustion in her eyes. Yet, even in this moment, she mustered a wan smile, her beauty still shining through.
A sense of unease began to gnaw at Franklin, growing stronger as she spoke. “Franklin, I think it’s time we get a divorce.
