Chapter 11
This fall in Yaville had stripped away the familiar, leaving an eerie silence in its wake.
The owner of the five–story building on the north side of Shiny Estate was no longer there. She breezed in and out without spending a single night, breaking her promise to Sharon for the first time.
And with her departure, the taste of Elizabeth’s breakfasts was gone forever.
Franklin had shared the news that morning, his words heavy with a sense of loss. Standing with her hands on her hips a e center of the estate’s main hall, Sharon had a faint smile on her face. “Elizabeth’s never been gone this long before. Could she be serious?”
Yvonne Jones, the woman Sharon was talking to remained silent, preoccupied with arranging the freshly delivered flowers in the hall.
“Yvonne, are you even listening to me?” Sharon suddenly raised her voice, which resounded through the entire hall.
Yvonne’s slender fingers paused on the flower petals. She fixed her gaze and replied, “I heard you.”
“Then why the silence?” Sharon asked.
“What should I say? Should I ask Frank to fetch her back? Does she even know her place? It’s absurd.”
Servants moved about them, yet Yvonne spoke without restraint, her words a stark reminder of the disrespect Elizabeth had endured in the Jones family.
Sharon seemed indifferent, neither adding to the insults nor coming to Elizabeth’s defense. With a casual shrug, she said, “I’m just worried about who’ll cook for me now.”
“Are you short on staff?” Yvonne asked.
The air was thick with the sweet scent of flowers, the finest blossoms reserved for the South Building, where Yvonne found solace in her garden.
As she inhaled the fragrance, a white petal flower was crushed in her hand, its destruction as inevitable as Elizabeth’s fate within the Jones household.
Her voice, light and mocking, carried a chilling prediction. “From the day she married in, I knew she’d eventually be packing her bags.”
Sharon’s eyes widened. “Why?” But no answer was forthcoming.
A servant’s entrance with the news of Franklin’s return interrupted the moment.

Yvonne, her back to the door, stiffened, her hand leaving the flower to clean the pollen from her fingers with deliberate care,
“Is he alone?” she asked, her voice soft,
“Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Hall are celebrating their golden wedding tonight, and Mr. Jones will be attending it,” the servant replied,
“Got it,” Yvonne replied gently. “I’ll go see him.”
Seeing Yvonne about to leave, Sharon stopped her, gripping her hand tightly. “What for?”
“Elizabeth isn’t around, so I’d like to check on him. Any issues?” Yvonne said.
Franklin was her brother, after all. It was only right for her to offer comfort in his time of marital strife.
The South Building and the North Building were quite a distance apart. It would take over ten minutes to walk the distance, which was marked by the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot.
It was on this path that Elizabeth had collapsed after donating blood, unnoticed until the servants found her hours later.
The gate to the North Building stood wide open, revealing a roomy interior. Inside a wall–mounted fish tank, goldfish lazily swam, creating soft ripples.
As Yvonne passed, she took a glance at it. “Those fish likely haven’t been fed for a day, she thought.
As Yvonne saw Franklin, she asked, “When are you leaving?”
Franklin, lost in thought, was in the midst of changing his clothes, his tie and cufflinks a stark contrast to the disarray of the room, a remnant of the argument he’d had with Elizabeth.
He absentmindedly picked up a tie and cufflinks and put them on.
Yvonne, leaning against the door frame, her voice barely above a whisper, asked, “Are you changing for Mrs. Hall’s golden wedding celebration?”
“Yeah,” replied Franklin calmly. His movements were slow as he adjusted his tic–a simple knot, the only one he knew how to tie, unlike Elizabeth, who had mastered many.
Yvonne’s gaze lingered on his fingers, her next question a soft thorn. “I heard you had a fight with your wife?”
