Chapter 13
Sofia’s Point of View
“Where is the rest of your stuff?” Ella asked as Ethan and I walked into the living room.
“This is it,” I replied, and Ella frowned.
“This is everything you own?” Ella asked
“Yes,” I replied. Ella stayed silent.
“Now that we have everything, we can leave,” Ethan said as he opened the front door. Mr. Prescott, the owner of the apartment complex, was standing at the door, looking like he was about to knock.
“Hello,” Ethan said, and Mr. Prescott’s eyes went to me. He had a frown
on his face.
“Is your mother here?” Mr. Prescott asked
“No,” I replied
“I need to speak to her immediately. She is two months behind on the rent, and I know the utilities have been cut off. If she doesn’t pay by the end of the day or keep our arrangement, I am going to have no other option but to
evict her.” Mr. Prescott said. I didn’t even want to think of the
arrangement he was talking about. Mr. Prescott was an old, dirty man. He was around sixty years old. I always saw him with females not much older than I was. He lived in the apartment which was above ours, and I could always hear him moaning and grunting. He was known to let the woman that couldn’t pay their rent stay as long as they fucked him. I didn’t want to think that my mom would do that, but I was sure she would and most likely had.
“I will let her know when I see her,” I said.
“I think we should speak alone, Sofia. There is a rumor going around that your mom left you here and married some man. I know you have nowhere else to go, and I don’t want you to end up on the streets. Maybe you and I can come up with an agreement of our own.,” Mr.Prescott said as his eyes roamed my body, making me feel disgusted. I heard something that sounded like a growl from beside me and looked at Ethan, which shocked me. Something else that shocked me was that his normally blue eyes were black. He looked like he was going to explode.
“Ethan,” Ella said, but he cut her off.
“Take Sofia to the car, now,” Ethan said, and Ella took my hand, making me look at her..
“Come on, Sofia,” Ella said. I looked back at Ethan to see he was still angry, and his eyes were still black. I didn’t know if it was a good idea to leave with her.
“Ethan,” I started to say, but he cut me off.

“Go to the car with Ella, Sofia,” Ethan said
“But,”
“NOW,” Ethan said, and I decided to do as he said. Ella and I walked to Ethan’s car, and she was still holding my hand.
“What happened? Is Ethan okay?” I asked
“He will be fine, Sofia. He is just upset at the guy. He will be fine.” Ella replied as we got in the car. I sat on the passenger side while Ella sat in the back.
“Ethan’s eyes. They were black. How could they turn black?” I asked, and Ella sighed
“They do that sometimes,” Ella said
“How.” I asked
“It isn’t my place to tell you that, Sof. Ethan will tell you soon.” Ella said. Ethan came back to the car about ten minutes later, and I was shocked that his eyes were back to their usual blue. He put the trash bag that my
belongings were in inside the trunk, and then he got in the car and looked
at me.
“Are you okay,” I asked worriedly, causing Ethan to smile.
“Yes, I am fine. I just had a conversation with Mr. Prescott. I let him know

that you would no longer be living in his apartment complex anymore and that there was no reason for him to speak to you about anything. I told him that if he had any questions or concerns, he would need to speak to your mother,” Ethan said. I had a feeling he wasn’t telling me everything that happened, but I let it go.
“How about we grab some lunch? You missed breakfast, and I am sure you are starving,” Ethan said
“I think that’s a great idea. I am starving,” Ella said from the backseat.
“What do you think, Sofia?” Ethan asked, and my stomach started to growl, which caused Ella and Ethan to laugh.
“I guess that’s a yes,” Ella said, and Ethan started the car and drove away.
We all agreed to go to Dinny’s since we all had a taste for something. different. Ethan shocked me by sitting next to me while Ella sat across from us. Ella and I got pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage, while Ethan got a burger and fries.
I listened silently while Ella spoke while we waited for our food. I could feel Ethan staring at me the entire time, which made me a little nervous. I didn’t understand why he was acting so weird. Ella went to the restroom, leaving Ethan and me alone at the table.
“Sofia,” Ethan said, and I looked at him.
“Yes,” I asked

“I was wondering if you would like to go to dinner with me tonight, just the two of us,” Ethan asked.
“Why,” I asked
“So we could talk,” Ethan said.
“Why would you want to talk to me? You never wanted to before now,” I asked, and he sighed.
“Look, Sof. I know I have been acting like a jackass to you. I honestly thought it was for the best, but now I know I was wrong. I thought I was protecting you by staying away from you,” Ethan said.
“What are you talking about?” I asked
“Look, I never wanted to stay away from you. I know you are confused. If you have dinner with me tonight, I promise to tell you everything.” Ethan-
said
“What about Jane?” I asked
“Jane and I aren’t together anymore. We broke up yesterday morning,” Ethan said. I was shocked because I thought they were in love. I always heard Jane talk about how happy they were together and how they were meant to be. Everyone seemed to think they were meant to be.
“Please, Sof. Please have dinner with me, and I promise to explain everything to you,” Ethan said. I thought about it and figured it wouldn’t
hurt to go to dinner with him. Maybe he did have a good reason for
ignoring me, though I doubted it, but I might as well listen to what he had to say. I might regret if later if I didn’t give him a chance to explain.
“Okay, I will go to dinner with you.”
