Chapter 47
“Not bad. I like her style.” Layla had spent the whole aftemoon talking with Benson.
Stephen called Lavia again. She saw his name on her screen, sighed, and ended the call without thinking twice.
“Who’s that?” Benson asked, noticing it was the second time the phone rang.
“Just some annoying guy,” she said.
“Your boyfriend?” he asked, curious..
“I’m not that desperate,” Layla replied.
They kept talking until it was time to go home. After a meeting, Jonah made an announcement, “Layla, tomorrow’s your first real day. Do you have the right clothes?”
Layla looked around at what her coworkers were wearing and nodded. “I’ll be fine.”
As Jonah and Layla were about to leave, they saw Benson standing around by the door.
“Layla, should I wait for you so we can leave together?” Benson asked casually.
Jonah noticed a car nearby and started getting nervous. Benson was getting too close to Layla
“What are you still doing here?” Jonah snapped. “You haven’t sold any houses, haven’t talked to any clients, and you’ve been chatting all day. Keep this up, and you’ll be fired before your probation is over.”
Benson quickly backed down. “Uh… right. I was just kidding, Jonal. I’ll leave now,” he mumbled as he walked away.
Layla frowned at Jonah. “Why are you yelling at him? If he’s not doing his job, then maybe you should reflect on that too, as his boss.”
After everyone had left, Jonah turned to Layla, gesturing politely toward a parked car. “Ms. Murray, Mr. Yates is here to pick you up.”
Layla looked in the direction he pointed, not too happy. Sure enough, there was a blackcar parked nearby. It was right in the spot where she had been chatting with
Benson.
Layla followed Jonah to the car, opened the passenger door, and got in. “Why are you here?” she asked, clearly annoyed.
Stephen glanced at Jonah and said, “Get in the car.”
Jonah looked nervous. He had never met someone so important at the company before. He knew that Lumina was funded by Aetheris Group, and Aetherls’s main investor was Murray Group. So, meeting someone from Murray Group made Jonah very anxious.
“Mr. Yates, If you need something, I can stay out here.”
Stephen frowned and said, “Get in the car.”
Jonah quickly climbed into the back seat. “Mr. Yates, what do you need?”
Stephen asked, “How did she do today?”
Jonah knew Stephen meant Layla.
“Uh__ Ms. Murray did very well, Jonah said, feeling nervous.
Stephen’s tone became colder. “In what way?”
Jonah started to sweat, struggling to come up with a good answer.
Layla looked at Jonah, who looked nervous in the backseat, and then at her husband, who was clearly upset. She said, “What’s your problem? If you’re in a bad mood, don’t bother picking me up!”
Stephen, still angry, asked, “Did you come to work just to chat all day?”
Layla replied, “It’s none of your business!”
Stephen thought about the earlier scene and asked, “What’s up with that guy?”
Jonali answered quickly, “Mr. Yates, he’s a new hire from last week. His work hasn’t been great.”
Stephen started the car, his tone cold. “Fire him,”
Layla was shocked. Still irritated, she slapped Stephen’s arm hard. The loud “smack” made the car go silent.
