Chapter 60
The articles talked about Layla abusing animals, taking drugs, and getting plastic surgery procedures done. Stephen knew that all these news were fake.
He ended the call and looked at Layla. “I’ll tell you what happens tomorrow,”
Layla pursed her lips. She wanted to thank him, but she just couldn’t say the words. Instead, she said, “I’m going to sleep.”
She then put her phone down and lay down on the bed.
Soon after, there was a shuffling sound next to her as Stephen tumed off the lights and pulled the blanket over her shoulders. But the more he did that, the more she shrugged it off her shoulders, insisting on leaving them bare.
Even with her back tumed toward him, she could hear him sighing in exasperation.
She clutched at her pillow and shut her eyes, feeling conflicted.
She never felt like she and Stephen were married. Right up until these past two days, Layla felt like something was stirring in her heart, but she didn’t know what it
was
She felt irritated, but she didn’t hate him. She grew more conflicted the more she thought about it. In the end, she fell asleep.
Once she fell asleep, Stephen got up to grab the blanket and cover her bare shoulders with it.
The temperature in the room was just perfect with the satin sheets and the slight gap in the window for ventilation.
Stephen’s body was turned toward Layla. He stared at her perfectly smooth back, remembering how she would always turn toward him when they were children. She would snuggle against his chest and ask him to tell her bedtime stories.
“Did Rapunzel ever end up marrying the prince, Steph? Did Snow White ever eat apples again? Can we find Jack’s beanstalk and climb it one day?”
And then, for some reason, they grew apart. They began fighting with each other. Layla would chase him away and try to punch him
It probably started around the time she learned that he had chosen to study business and switch professions without telling her. That had caused their relationship to fall apart
Eventually, ber friends invited her out to hang out and get some drinks, Stephen’s coldness further alienated Layla, and she began hating him.
Stephen slowly shut his eyes as he replayed these memories in his head.
The next day, as Layla was doing her makeup, she saw Stephen trying to find his tie in the closet.
Layla applied some powder on her face nonchalantly. She felt guilty as she looked at Stephen through the mirror.
“Layla?”
“I’m going to have breakfast.” Layla got up and lett.
Stephen watched as she ran off, then returned his gaze to his ties. After a moment of silence, he tookout a tie at random and walked out.
In the dining room, Stephen said, “I’ll send you to work today.”
Stephen glanced at Layla. Then, he ignored her and continued eating.
After that, Stephen still insisted on driving her to work. From afar, he saw the famillar tie a
around Benson’s collar. He then directed his attention to Layla, who was sitting in the passenger seat next to him,
