Chapter 87
When Layla arrived at the restaurant and got out of the car, Sally was already waiting.
As they got onto the stairs to the entrance, Sally urged, “Let’s head inside.”
The group entered the opulent restaurant, and everyone couldn’t help but marvel at their surroundings. “Wow, being a manager really is something! You can even afford to treat us at such a fancy place.
“Sally, how much do you make as a manager?” One of the unconvinced colleagues asked.
Sally glanced back at her and rebuked, “Not as much as the sales champion.”
“Then why bother being a manager? Why not just go back to being the sales champion?
Layla interjected, “Well, the company recognizes Sally’s abilities and decided she should become the manager. Why didn’t they choose you?
In the past, Benson might have tried to hold Layla back, worried that she would make too many enemies in the industry. But now, he didn’t see the point.
“Layla’s right. The company appointed Ms. Brown because of her competence. We’re here to enjoy a meal, not bring in any sour grapes.”
“Benson does know who he should flatter. He’s now a rising star among the biggest shots in our company,” a veteran colleague mocked.
“I just know better than to offend the leaders and get myself tired,” Benson replied.
sally whispered her thanks to Layla, “Thank you for stepping in.
Without looking up from the menu, Layla responded, “You’ve helped me too.”
As she scanned the menu, she remarked to Sally, “Looks like this dinner might cost you two months of salary.”
Sally chuckled. “Order whatever you like. I’m fine with it as long as it’s under 30 thousand dollars.”
“And if it goes over that?”
Sally smiled. “If it’s your order, I’ll accept that too.”
Sally had ordered the basics, so everyone else added a dish or two to the order.
“Layla, you’ve been to so many high–end places with your husband. You must have been here before, right? How’s the food?” a colleague probed, trying to dig for information about Layla’s husband.
Layla responded, “Funny enough, I’ve never been here with my husband.”
“Doesn’t he take you to his business dinners? Another colleague jumped in.
Layla let out a cold laugh. “I wouldn’t want to go even if he wanted to.”
Benson sat beside her and gave her a thumbs–up.
- up. He was growing to be even more impressed by Layla’s standing in her household after leaming about her background.
Sensing the tension, a veteran sales consultant quickly changed the topic to ease the atmosphere and offered some advice to Layla.
“Layla, you should temper your personality a little. While you’re young and beautiful, you can afford to have a temper, but as you get older, men might not stay as loyal.”
Another consultant who looked to be in her thirties, added, “How many men are truly loyal anyway? But Layla, you don’t have kids yet, right?
“You should have a couple of kids while you’re young to secure your position and lock him in the family. Don’t take offense, but let me be blunt, that works like a
charm to every inan.”
Before Layla could respond, the conversation quickly shifted as everyone started sharing gossip from their own lives.
Soon, the dishes arrived, and the group ate and chatted. Everyone enjoyed the meal except for the two disgruntled colleagues,
