Chapter 12
“When did you regain your memory?”
The doctor stood beside me, watching the raging inferno.
“During the examination that day, or… from the beginning…”
I didn’t respond.
The doctor flipped through the files in his hands and sighed. “Arthur, twenty–two years old, has developed a severe avoidant attachment personality due to childhood experiences and his mother’s influence…”

I pulled out my phone and dialed the fire department.
“Softened up?”
“He spent money to support my mother six more years.”
“If he can live, I wouldn’t mind giving him six years too.”

still fixed his gaze on me.
“Cary… Cary… you’re okay, as long as you’re okay…”
He fell from the stretcher onto the ground, clawing at the steps with his bloodied, charred hands, leaving a long trail of blood as he crawled toward me like a penitent.
Looking up at me with unfocused eyes, he wore an ugly smile.
“Cary, you didn’t leave me…”
“Mm.” I lowered my gaze. “I’ll watch you die.”
His expression, once bathed in the light of hope, froze for a moment.

His lips trembled, shedding large flakes of blackened dead skin. Yet, he soon broke into an even brighter smile.
“That’s great, Cary… so great… you remember how much we loved each other, right? You remember the candy I gave you the first time we met…”
I couldn’t tell if he was deluding himself with his own fabricated stories or if he had completely lost his sanity.
“Cary… Cary… you love me, don’t you…

I remained silent, watching as his lips moved slower and slower until they finally ceased.
“Mother…”
“Please look at me…”
