I heard the sound of an ambulance and smelled
the antiseptic from the operating table.
“Why is this happening… Why is she still asleep… Doctor, what’s wrong with my wife…”
I heard the doctor’s voice: “The injury was caused by her head hitting a rock, combined with drowning. There might be some damage, possibly…”
“Are you saying my wife won’t wake up?”
I heard Arthur smashing things, roaring at the doctor: “You’re talking nonsense! How could she be in a vegetative state?”

The noise was unbearable.
I don’t know how long I slept, but when I woke up, I saw a man sitting by the bed, disheveled and with dark circles under his eyes. His vacant gaze lingered on me for a moment before he suddenly lunged forward.
“Cary! You… you’re awake…”
He smelled bad, and I covered my nose. “You stink.”
He looked taken aback, forcing a nervous smile. “I… I’ve been sitting by your side for a week, not daring to leave or bathe… Anyway, it’s good that you’re awake, we…”

from me with some distaste.
In that moment, he seemed to lose his composure, his lips trembling as he hesitantly said, “I’m… Arthur, your husband…”
I burst into laughter. “What are you talking about? My husband is young, not some old man like you.”
He turned his head stiffly to look at his
reflection in the glass. His eyes were bloodshot, his face gaunt, and I noticed gray streaks in his
hair.
The doctor had said my brain was injured, leaving only memories from when I was a
teenager.

That was a good time, when I had only encountered the beautiful side of the world and
hadn’t yet experienced the pain to come.
“Carina, you… don’t remember me?” Arthur asked slowly.
“Doctor, who is he?” I looked up.
Before the doctor could respond, Arthur abruptly grabbed my collar, pulling my face towards him, his own contorted with rage.
“Carina! How dare you forget me… How could you forget me after all these years?”
But then, as if realizing his outburst, he forced a
smile back onto his face.

“Cary, trust me, I’m the best person for you in this world, you know…”
I ignored him and touched my chest. “Where’s my ring?”
In an instant, his face turned ashen. His lips
moved, but no words came out for a long time.
