Chapter 5
Arthur cautiously leaned in and asked, “Cary, I’m the person who treats you the best in this world, right?”
“Mm–hmm.”
I gently pulled him into my embrace.
He was incredulous, his body trembling slightly.
But the next second, I recoiled from him, as if
struck by an electric shock.
“Cary, did I do something wrong?” he asked, panicked and bewildered.
“You feel like an ice block, so cold…”

“I’m sorry… I’ll be right back!”
He stumbled out of the room.

Everything fell silent again.
In the dim light, I bowed my head, gently fiddling with the ring on my finger.
Arthur reappeared, dressed in clean, neat clothes. He seemed a bit uneasy. “Um, I’m not cold anymore.”
I looked at him, puzzled.
“Can you hug me now…?”
I smiled, stood up, and gently embraced him.

His tense body immediately relaxed, and he lifted his hands to wrap around my back.
But then I let go of him.
I climbed into bed. “Alright, I’m going to sleep.”
Arthur was silent for a moment, then slowly
leaned down close to my ear:
“But Cary’s mom wants Cary to be with me…”
My eyes snapped open.
“Doesn’t Cary want to see your mom?” His voice held a dangerous allure. “Mom is at our home.”
I hesitated for a long time but finally nodded.

He chuckled softly, patting my head. “Okay, let’s go home.”
He stood up and opened the door, then turned back to see me still sitting on the edge of the
bed.
“My legs hurt, I can’t walk.” I swung my feet, tilting my head at him. “Carry me.”
He turned around reluctantly.
“I just can’t reach you. Please squat down.” I pouted.
He glanced back at me, frowning, hesitating.
Maybe he remembered.

Perhaps he remembered the day he proposed, when he took out the diamond ring and whispered sweet nothings in my ear, and someone in the crowd teased:
“A standing–up proposal? Get on your knees!”
He had smiled, scanning the crowd, and finally looked at me, saying each word deliberately:
“Do you think you deserve it?”
But today, he hesitated only for a second before slowly kneeling down.
One knee on the floor.
“Cary, is this okay?”

His back was warm. The swaying made me drowsy.
I slowly closed my eyes.
Arthur called my name a few times, but I didn’t respond.
Half–asleep, I seemed to hear him muttering to
himself.
“How… how could you forget me?”
“But maybe it’s for the best.”
“My toy can be enjoyed anew…”
