Chapter 40
Celeste froze and suddenly choked on her own spit. She started coughing, almost thinking that she hadn’t heard him right. “W–What did you just say?”
Julian sat up straight, his face calm as always. Then, he repeated, “I said, marry me.”
Celeste felt like her whole world had just been flipped upside down
Why would he say something so scary out of nowhere?
And this random proposal–what was he even thinking?
“Mr. Ford…Come on, don’t joke around like that. It’s not funny, haha.” Celeste forced a laugh. She stared at Julian, hoping to see any signs that indicated he was Just kidding.
But there weren’t any–not even a little!
“I’m dead serious, Julian said, his voice steady.
Celeste felt awful
Why was he being so serious about this? They’d only known each other for a few days, and he’s already talking about marriage?
Celeste forced herself to stay calm and asked, “Mr. Ford, where did this idea even come from?
Marriage would be a big deal, and most people would think it over carefully. So, why was Julian throwing it out there like it was nothing?
Julian seemed unsure of what to say himself. When he’d said it earlier, it was just on impulse–he hadn’t actually thought it through at all.
Even now, after having some time to think, he still couldn’t figure out why he’d said it
He’d never proposed to anyone before, and once the adrenaline wore off, be realized just how careless his words had been.
In hindsight, the way he said it was way too casual.
Now, the room was completely quiet.
Celeste no longer feeling panicked–quietly waited for Julian to speak.
After a long while with no response from him, she doubtfully looked at him. “Mr. Ford… you didn’t propose because of Sam, did you?”
Julian blinked. Then, after thinking for a moment, he said, “It seems… that that might be the case.”
Celeste’s kindness toward Sam had sparked an impulse Julian couldn’t control.
Crieste couldn’t help but laugh at this. “Mr. Ford, you really don’t need to do that. I take care of Sam because I genuinely care about him. I hate to see him hurt or sad, so I do everything I can for him.
“I never expected anything in return, especially not a marriage proposal from you!
Julian’s eyes darkened, “Do you not like me then?”
Celeste froze in surprise. “No, no, not at all! How could 17 with your status, there must be so many women in Dansburg who would love to marry you. I wouldn’t dare to not like you.”
“Then why did you say no?” Julian asked, clearly upset.
Upon seeing how angry he looked, Celeste felt scared. She swallowed and said, “Isn’t it obvious? It’s just too crazy! Marriage is a big deal. There’s so much more to it than you’re making it seem.”
Julian’s frown deepened, “Like what?”
“Well, for one, shouldn’t people get to know each other first? Build a real connection? And think about what both families want?
“Many couples breakup right before their wedding because of family problems. And we’re talking about the Ford family here–a famous and important family that cares about status and reputation. So… I think, well it’s probably… not very realistic.”
Celeste tried to explain her reasons, but by the end of her sentence, her voice was barely audible.
It wasn’t that she wanted to back down, but Julian’s face was truly frightening. He looked like a storm was coming, and it made her heart race in tear.
But what could she do? She had already said it. She couldn’t take it back now,
