Chapter 27: Decker’s Fatal Weakness
Seeing so many people an home, Emma was momentarily stunned.
She carried a large bag, struggling with its weight, her face red and sweaty.
“You’re back? Grandma has been worried about you all morning.”
Emma nodded at Irene and walked into the house.
Stefan was sitting on the sofa, drinking tea. His sleeves were slightly rolled up, and his long fingers held a pumpkin cake, makin he cake look even more tender and crispy.
Emma asked, “Who is this?”
Emma glanced at Irene, then at Stefan..
This man looked cold and indifferent, as if nothing mattered to him, but Emma felt his temper wasn’t good.
Instinctively, Emma rejected this person.
He looked familiar. Where had she seen him before? Emma was confused and turned to look at Irene.
Irene patted her head and smiled, “He’s a friend, visiting us.”
She helped Emma carry her things upstairs.
With their figures disappearing, Madame Kashi went to her bedroom. Harper’s face turned serious, “Boss, that little girl seems problematic, not simple.”
Stefan sipped his tea.
“No matter, she poses no threat to us,” Stefan said calmly.
Upstairs, in the abandoned attic.
The attic was lit by a single bulb. In the dim light, Emma opened the bag.
It was filled with hard drives, printed account books, shopping cards, and a booklet with a list of names.
Irene eagerly picked up the documents and began to read.
After a few minutes, she slowly put the documents down.
“No wonder Decker got bailed out of jail so quickly. He has special connections. Irene smiled, her expression filled with curious madness.
“Hal I’m curious to see how he’ll fare without their protection.”
Emma pulled out a piece of paper from the pile of documents.
“Irene, I found this in the FBI’s internal systern. Decker took credit for your rescue of Palmer, applying for the credit and bonus without informing the police. The bonus will be awarded at the detective competition in four days, as part of the opening event.”
Irene raised an eyebrow.
She gazed at the bright red sunset and slowly smiled.
“I’d like to see how confident he is, claiming he deduced the crime scene in
front of me.”
“Irene, does he not know you’re Grandma’s granddaughter?”
“Apparently not, or he wouldn’t dare do this.”
Irene lazily leaned back in the old, soft chair, “Decker, it’s time to step down.”
For years, Decker had wielded his power in the FBI, blocking opportunities for others.
Without both ability and money, it was impossible to pass the exams to join the FBI.
Even with money, one needed to please Decker. Otherwise, it was futile; Decker would still withhold positions.
Decker not only profited from this but also created a corrupt network.
Irene knew that even the FBI had factions.
The conflicts between different factions sometimes hindered justice that should be served.
In this regard, Frank was much better than Decker.
Frank gave opportunities to anyone with ability.
Moreover, Decker likely framed Grandma years ago.
“Check again whether Grandma’s incident was related to Decker.”
Emma frowned, “Grandma wouldn’t harm anyone!”
Irene nodded, “I think so too. But we need evidence. We believe in Grandma, but others won’t. We can’t let Grandma bear this stigma.”
Emma nodded, “Got it.”
Footsteps approached, and the door opened. Madame Kashi smiled at them, ” What are you two doing here?”
“Emma wanted to find my old toys.”
Madame Kashi’s smile faded when she saw Irene’s hand, injured from hitting Sari, scratched by his jewelry. She sighed, “Irene, do you really want to go?”
trene said, “They sent the invitation. There’s no reason not to go.”
Madame Kashi felt a mix of emotions–touched by having such a good granddaughter and worried she might be bullied at the competition.
She couldn’t let Irene suffer unpleasant things in her youth because of her.
“If you want to go, then go.”
Madame Kashi patted Irene’s head. Her old, wrinkled hand was warm.
“Gain some experience. If you encounter interesting things or meet amazing people, take pictures and tell Grandma about it.”
“Especially the famous one lately!”
“Who is that?” Irene asked casually, continuing the conversation.
Madame Kashi put on her glasses, took out her phone, and showed a picture,”
The witness who solved the Norman family kidnapping case!”
Irene froze.
After a moment, she laughed, holding her forehead.
Emma peeked at the photo and then at Irene in disbelief.
“Grandma, you can’t believe everything online.” Irene laughed helplessly,”
That’s clearly a man.”
Madame Kashi scrutinized the photo, “That’s impossible, Look at those narrow shoulders and soft cheeks. It’s clearly a girl!”
Irene sighed, “Grandma, he wrote in the video comments that he’s a man, doing cosplay and riding the trend.”
Madame Kashi adjusted her glasses, squinting closer.
“Is that so?”
Seeing the serious, earnest old lady examining the photo, Irene couldn’t help but laugh.
“I’ve contacted a friend’s child. He’s going to the competition too. Let him take care of you, and don’t wander off.”
Madame Kashi nagged, and Irene smiled, agreeing.
Emma followed them obediently.
Not wander off?
That was impossible. This time, Decker was definitely going to jail!
Stefan and his team were leaving. Irene and Emma saw them off, watching the luxury car disappear around the corner. Without looking back, Irene said, “I’m going. Take care of Grandma.”
“Alright.”
Irene walked towards the southern district, dialing a familiar number.
“Hello?”
“Decker got out too quickly. You’re still useless as ever.” Irene’s smiling voice said, making Frank clench the phone, his jaw tight.
was careless.”
Irene knew how rare it was for this stern man to admit his mistake, so she didn’t tease further, “This time, I’ll provide some information. Don’t disappoint
me.”
On the other end, Frank held back his frustration, “Scorpion, I’m not your subordinate.”
Irene chuckled.
“Then what’s our relationship?”
Frank was silent.
Some in the FBI said his lover was the Constitution. He didn’t disagree. To him, the law was paramount. Even though Irene had provided benefits, if she violated the law, he’d arrest her without hesitation.
But there was no evidence now.
Frank gripped the dumbbell, looking at his gym mirror.
The reflection showed a rare look of hesitation.
Frank turned, placing the dumbbell down with anud in the
ty room.
He spoke coldly, “Just this once. Next time, you won’t escape.”
Irene laughed silently, “Using and discarding people, you’re too much.” Her voice was soft and coquettish.
Frank listened to the young, tender voice on the phone, silently almost laughing.
Scorpion had a talent for mimicking voices.
Before, she used a deep, sexy voice, making Frank picture a thirty–year–old woman, scarred and reeking of smoke.
“No law prosecutes for using and discarding.” Irene sneered, then softened her tone, “Goodbye, brave young lion. I wish you success.”
The call ended. Irene drank from a cup and called Emma.
“Tonight, hack into the FBI system and report all the information you gathered. Make it public.”
Let’s see how you recover from this.
Irene’s eyes were filled with darkness.
